About us
Law has been taught in Erlangen since the university was founded in 1743. Important jurists have emerged from the university and have worked there. This great tradition continues to have an effect: today, the Faculty of Law presents itself as modern and future-oriented – just like its home town, which has advanced to become a cosmopolitan centre of innovation in recent decades without losing any of its original Franconian charm. Erlangen offers a wide range of cultural and leisure activities and is conveniently located in the Nuremberg metropolitan region: Nuremberg is only 15 km away, the world heritage city of Bamberg only 35 km.
The department is located in the building Schillerstraße 1, Erlangen.
The Faculty of Law has resisted the trend of mass universities. Its members feel at home, they know each other. The interactions between teachers and students are charakterised by openness and the modern, light-flooded library enables in-depth, effective studies in a pleasant atmosphere. Everything is available within short distance: lecture halls, seminar rooms and library are in the middle of the city; shops, pubs and housing are nearby and nature lies right at the doorstep.
In addition to the academic foundation, the teaching is also characterised by practical relevance and training in key qualifications such as rhetoric, negotiation management and communication. For this purpose an Institute for Lawyers‘ Law and Lawyers‘ Practice exists at our faculty since 2003. Our curricula enable a quick start to studies (e.g. through tutorials for first-year students), efficient learning and optimal exam preparation (e.g. through the Erlangen exam course).
The department is part of a global academic network from which all of the approximately 3,000 members of the department benefit. Student and lecturer exchanges, integrated working groups with foreign students, cross-border (research) projects and language teaching are a matter of course at our university.
The university’s diverse range of degree programmes also offers the opportunity to broaden one’s horizon by gaining insights to the way other disciplines work and think.
